MELVIN N. MILES, JR

Melvin Miles, Director of University Bands and Instructor of Music at Morgan State University, is the conductor of the MSU Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble. Also, his responsibilities include directing the MSU Marching Band, "The Magnificent Machine", the "Bear Band, MSU's Pep Band, Jazz Quintet and the Brass Ensemble. As an instructor in the Music Department, Mr. Miles teaches applied trumpet, instrumental conducting, orchestration, and brasswind methods. He has served on the faculty of Morgan since 1973.
A native of Baltimore, Mr. Miles was educated in the Baltimore Public School System, culminating with a Music Diploma from Frederick Douglass High School. He received his Bachelor of
Science degree (1973) and Masters of Arts degree (1978) in music education from Morgan State University.
Mr. Miles is an active arranger and maintains an energetic performance schedule, performing trumpet with local chamber groups, wind ensembles, and with many local and national recording and show groups. As a conscientious music educator, one should note that he is always working with the public schools rendering clinics, workshops, guest conducting, and adjudicating concert, jazz, and marching bands throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Melvin Miles is the former National president of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Community Arts Project, Inc., a
consultant for the Music Advisory Ltd. Of New York and the Treasure for the council of Higher Education in Music. He is also a member of the Music Education National Conference, Maryland Music Educators Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, National Judges Association, Promethean Kappa Tau Honorary Society, Alpha Psi Omega National Honorary Society, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
For the past eight years, "Miles" has written, adapted, and arranged musical scores for and has performed as the Musical Director for the "Encore Dinner Theater". He has arranged and performed several selections for Bary Levinson's movie Avalon, and you may have seen him in Levinson's movie Diner for which he scored several selections as well as acted.
