MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

The original idea in 1977 was quite simple yet provocative: Implement a set of design and planning programs that allow a range of curricula choices to students while maintaining a commonality of purpose and objectives. Develop a high-level of technical competence through academic training, thus allowing each student to participate in the contemporary milieu, anticipate change, and adapt to change. Equal to technical competence are an understanding of the complex urban cultural context in which design and planning emerge. Give the opportunity to each student to define and formulate a particular role for himself or herself, as well as the opportunity to view and experience the makings of the environment in the broader perspective of an interdisciplinary learning process organized toward professional practice.

This idea is still the functional guide of the Institute of Architecture & Planning. It is a major cornerstone in our role in the development and revitalization of Baltimore City and the State of Maryland. It lends credibility to the Institute’s curricula and our responsibility as part of Morgan’s university community as being capable to respond creatively to the challenge of improving the environment in which we live.

We are proud of our progress and contributions. No matter the satisfaction, there are always more challenges. That’s why we think that we present opportunities for your personal growth --to approach problems rigorously, to visualize a unique solution, to promote the issues of social responsibility-- that is essential for meaningful participation in contemporary life as well as becoming professional architects, city and regional planners, and landscape architects. It is from this understanding that I challenge you to join us.

Richard E. Lloyd, Ph.D.
